UK law firm Peninsula is behind the most recent survey warning that failure to unwind, relax and the inability to have a release from work has a dire effect on employers' work performance and motivation.

  • 8 in 10 bosses work in excess of 60 hours per week
  • 7 in 10 employers only have 4 hours sleep each day
  • 7 in 10 bosses say work is bad for their relationship

Peter Done, Managing Director of Peninsula said:

"Employers today are under a great deal of stress and find it impossible to divert there minds from workplace issues and worries regardless of what time it is. As a managing director myself I know how it feels to be constantly pushed for time everyday. There is a lot of talk about how employees are stressed in the workplace but the pressures employers are under are immense with responsibility and expectation coming from both inside and outside the company. However the results show that in the UK we have many entrepreneurs that spend a great deal of time and effort as well as making social sacrifices to make their business run effectively.

Managers are too busy and are often afraid to what they might come back to if they neglected their business for a sake of a holiday for instance and always have there mobile phone on hand for work issues. A failure to have a release and outlet from work pressures can have serious consequences, depending on the individual of course. Some employers find the pressure a buzz or a motivation to coincide with their willingness, determination and relentless drive to succeed. However others feel the strain more than others and are liable to have detrimental health implications both mentally and physically often leading to burnout.

Employers seem to be working longer and longer hours with the majority now working in excess of 60 hours in a week, working long hours has many pitfalls and it seems bosses are forfeiting quality for quantity of work. Employers are also increasingly sleeping less with the vast majority only managing 4 hours in a day. It is well known that failure to unwind, relax and inability to have a release from work has a knock on effect on ones work performance and motivation. As a result of commitments and high levels of responsibility, employers have to be on their guard at all times and have many things to consider at one time, which as shown in these results can cause problems in sustaining relationships and an active social life’’.
